Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct primary health care system that incorporates the art and science of traditional and natural forms of medicine with modern scientific knowledge. The practice of naturopathic medicine involves disease diagnosis as well as treatment and prevention using natural therapies that include botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, traditional Chinese medicine / acupuncture and lifestyle counselling. A Naturopathic Doctor is a primary care practitioner distinguished by their practicing philosophy, which seeks to restore and maintain optimum health by emphasizing nature’s inherent self-healing process. A naturopathic doctor views the individual from a wholistic perspective, incorporating the physiological, structural, psychological, social, spiritual, environment and lifestyle factors affecting the patient. Naturopathic medicine emphasizes disease as a process rather than disease as an entity. The primary goal is to treat the underlying cause of the disease by selecting treatments that are unique to the individual and not simply the symptoms. This approach has proven successful in treating both chronic and acute conditions. In Ontario, licensed Naturopathic Doctors have at least 7 years of post-secondary education, must graduate from an accredited educational institution, receive their professional licensing from the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy-Naturopathy (BDDT-N) as well as complete and pass international licensing exams (NPLEX). Naturopathic Doctors in Ontario have recently become regulated under the Regulated Health Practitioners Act (RHPA) alongside medical doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and most other health-care providers in the province.

Chinese Medicine is an evidence based medicine and is the oldest continuously practiced medicine in the world, dating back to the First Century BCE. TCM's understanding of the body is focused on the functional entities of the body and their ability to work harmoniously when the body is in a balanced and healthy state, or their disfunction when there is disease or health conditions. TCM seeks to use presenting signs and symptoms to find the pattern of disease and therefore treat the root cause. This diagnostic method is rooted in TCM's idea that in order to understand a person's health, you must study the functional aspects, rather than the structures themselves. Dr. TeWinkeluses these principles to offer Acupuncture treatments.

Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most common and dependable medical therapies used in the world. It is by nature simple, safe and effective health care. Acupuncture practitioners use thin, sterile disposable needles inserted superficially into specific areas of the body in order to help the body's ability to heal itself.

Over the three decades or so in which acupuncture has gained popularity in the North America, it has been proven by an increasing body of scientific evidence to be not only exceptionally safe, but statistically effective as well.

The World Health Organization lists 28 diseases, symptoms or conditions for which acupuncture has been proved – through controlled trials—to be an effective treatment. It further lists 63 conditions where acupuncture has been shown to be affective, but further study is needed.

Helping women and teen’s go from confused and frustrated with their health to clear-headed and empowered, Dr. TeWinkel has supported 100s of women, teens and families regain their confidence in their health, in their hormones, in their mental health and begin look forward to a bright future.
